Calculating the combined VLT of a glass window with film over it and the tint you want to install involves the multiplication of the VLT of the glass by the window tint. For example, if you mount a 5% film to a glass window with 80% VLT tint, it will equal 4%. So, the glass and shade will have a collective VLT of 4%.
In the window tinting world we refer to our films by percentage points. In the simplest terms, the lower the percentage, the darker the window film will be. A 5% VLT film is very dark as it only lets though 5% of visible light and a 70% film is very light as it lets through 70%. There is, however, one little complication, and that is that windows as installed by the factory do not allow 100% of light to pass through. Most auto makers very slightly tint their glass, usually with a VLT of about 80%.

For example, your window has an existing VLT of 80% and you’d like to make it darker by installing a window tint film with 50% VLT. The calculation to get the combined VLT percentage is: 80% X 50% = 40% VLT. This means you’ll end up with a 40% VLT tint after installing your film. It’s best you calculate accordingly even before purchasing window tint film to make sure you stay within state legal window tint levels.
A 10 percent VLT tint, for instance, allows only 10 percent of visible light to pass through the film. An 80 percent VLT tint enables substantially more light to pass through the film. While tinting windows, states such as California and Oregon often utilize VLT % to decide what darkness level is too dark. Most automobiles do not come with perfectly clear glass out of the factory. In fact, they virtually all have a VLT of around 80%. As a result, you must account for this when estimating how much light really passes through.
In general, you will find a factory window tin percentage ranging between 15% to 20%. This specifies the windows would be deflecting around 80 to 85 percent of the visible light, while it allows around 15-20%. However, the above numbers are mostly limited to rear windows.
